More Great Information on Cocktail Glass:
Matching the Glass to the Cocktail
Everyone should know about the range of different cocktails that are out there, but what many individuals don't understandis exactly how many distinct cocktail glasses there actually are. Generally it is the potency of the cocktail itself which determines which glass is preferred but more about that later. Many of these glasses you will only see at your local bar however they are available to buy for use at home if you are a regular cocktail drinker.Essentially the most well-known cocktail glasses is the martini glass. A martini glass has a triangular-shaped top with a stem and a flat base. The form of the glass is typically created to stop the ingredients of the cocktail from breaking up whilst the stem is used to help keep the drink cold for as long as possible. The glass itself normally has a volume of eight ounces of liquid and is normally used with drinks that do not contain ice such as; manhattans, martinis, and cosmopolitans themselves. You can be assured that any fine bar will contain a good supply of martini glasses. While not as well known as the martini or margarita glass, a cocktail glass that is still widely used around the world is the highball glass . The highball glass is typically used for mixed drinks. It can carry quite a large volume of 14 oz. of liquid and it has very tall and also straight sides. These glasses are normal for serving drinks with ice and also mixed drinks such as; Tom Collins and Moscow Mule, Gin and Tonic and Bloody Mary. The exact opposite of the highball glass is considered to be the lowball cocktail glass. The lowball cocktail glass gets its name from the simple fact that it is shorter and broader than the highball glass, being a similar shape to a tumbler glass. The lowball can hold a volume of ten ounces of liquid and is used for the stronger cocktails which usually contain whiskey or scotch.Quite an intriguing cocktail glass, which you might not be aware of, is called the hurricane glass. This glass is shaped much like the highball glass apart from the fact that they have indented sides which give it its distinctive lamp shape. The glass itself can carry a volume as high as ten ounces of liquid and is normally used for possibly tropical-mixed or frozen cocktails. The other glasses that are often used for cocktails consist of tumblers and wine glasses. These are less related to cocktails however they can be used in the absence of a traditional cocktail glass. For example, the wine glass can act like a martini glass in that it still includes the bowl, stem and base that can act together to both stabilize the glass and also to keep the cocktail cold for as long as possible. However, a tumbler, can act in place of a lowball glass as it is quite effective at serving drinks with ice such as whiskey or scotch. Admittedly, it’s not best but if you care far more for the taste as opposed to the presentation then it won't make a difference too much to you. Of course, cocktails are made to be fun and that element can extend to the glass too. Cocktail glasses can be found in far more styles that you can imagine, with stems and coloured bowls, textured and pattern glass, twisted or architectural stems - really just about anything goes. For the purist though a regular glass, decorated only with the prescribed accoutrements is usually the most preferred selection.
