More Great Information on Horse Colt:

Domino – The Speed Defining Colt from the “Eclipse” Bandwagon

The dark chestnut colt derived his speed from great grand sire Eclipse; he happened to be one of the few selected offspring from the royal bloodline to carry the Eclipse gene line forward. Foaled in 1891, towards the end of the 19th century traversing into the 20th, Domino was born reflecting the inherited speed from his spectacular pedigree apart from an imperative stamina that would later dominate his performances in each of his ventures.

Even as the horse racing domain in those days comprised of long strenuous races run for over a mile and sometimes even two miles or more, Domino found his reputation as a speed champ redefining the horizons of speed exhibited by the thoroughbreds. As a two year old, he started nine times and won all of them, especially as races were evolving from their age of dead heats to more specifically shorter distance challenges. He won the great Eclipse Stakes, Futurity Stakes and also Matron and Produce Stakes races.

During his two year old season, Domino’s arch rival Dobbins had offered him plentiful threat; they met again in a match race that never could substantially establish who was better until the three year old season set off. Domino was awarded Champion Two Year Old 1893.

His three year old maiden was broken with Withers Stakes, a mile long race that would to some extent challenge his stamina but he eventually conquered the distance with a head’s lead over contender Henry of Navarre and three lengths lead over Dobbins. During the American Derby, Domino had injured himself due to which his stayed out of the Belmont Stakes along with Travers. He, however made a strong comeback with his victory in the Ocean Handicap. In a matter of not more than a few days, Domino’s return was contested by a match race to be held between him and an older handicap champion, Clifford. Domino destroyed all competition by winning the race with a ¾ length lead.

Also referred to as the “Black Whirlwind”, Domino was now the winner of Culver Stakes along with another match race with rival Henry of Navarre that almost ended in a tie. However, the rematch witnessed a slowed and given up Domino with third contender Clifford losing equally bad to the race champion Dobbins. Domino’s racing season ended in almost no recognition despite six wins out of eight starts that year.

The fourth racing season, 1895, Domino raced eight times winning four of them. HE went on to win the Coney Island, Sheepshead Bay Handicap. The other four, he placed second in the Coney Island Fall Handicap and lost one. Domino soon retired to stud with Henry of Navarre stealing his final races. He finally stood for two short seasons, siring Hall of Famer, Colin; Horse of the Year (twice), Commando; and several other stakes race winners.

These days, one can find Domino racing on the race circuits of the
