More Great Information on Swirly Bar:
What's that swirly bar before old barber shops?
Does anybody understand what the offer is by using the swirly bar that spins before old barber shops? How did that trend start, what is the purpose of it?? I saw one yesterday and it is been annoying the hell from me.
The barber pole goes back the dark ages. In those days, barbers not just cut hair, however they were dental practitioners and surgeons. Among the common surgical procedures within the dark ages was "bloodletting"... that was the action of cutting the veins inside a person's arm to allow them bleed out. Bloodletting ended when someone was sick because it was beleived when you allow them to bleed out, the sickness would also bleed out.
To complete bloodletting, the barber might have the individual tightly grasp a stick that was covered with bandages (much like the way a physician today have a patient grab a ball when drawing bloodstream). This could make the veins to come out and be more visible. The barber would then cut the vein and let it bleed. After several mintues of bleeding, the barber would unwrap the bandages in the pole and bandage in the cuts. Once the bandages were taken off the individual, these were cleaned and rewrapped to the pole to be used again. After condinued wrapping and unwarpping, the bloodstream stained together with fresh bandages would seem like the red-colored and whitened barber pole you're familar with.
Eventually barbers were banned from doing surgical procedures, however the red-colored and whitened removed pole had hard itself like a distinguishable indication of the barber shop and stays so today.
