The Myth of Vampire Bats - Or is it? by Libby
There are a lot of concerns by people over vampire bats, and in a number of cases, rightly so.
One myth that isn't true though is its size. The actual vampire bat body is very small, although its wingspan measure about a foot wide.
But when you get a closeup of this little critters teeth, those are a myth, but a reality. As a matter of fact, they're so sharp that when they penetrate their victims, they rarely, if ever, can be felt.
How they feed is they make one bite, and then wait for the blood to come out, and they lick it as it drains from the punctured wound.
While there is no danger of a vampire bat killing a larger animal or human if it feeds on them, it can kill a smaller animal or bird that way, because of their much smaller amount of blood.
They can feed on nothing else but blood, because of their tiny throat, which isn't able to swallow anything other than liquid. It's unique kidneys help it to absorb the water in blood so it gets the best nutrients out of its feeding.
These little guys do feed on livestock and humans, but primarily livestock. Humans become a target largely because of the movement of cattle or whatever livestock they may be feeding on to market, thus forcing them to find a new supply of food.
Where vampire bats are most dangerous is when they feed on diseased animals, and then pass that disease on to their next victim. They can also pass it on to one another, because they're major groomers, similar to a cat. That's how they are managed when they become too much of a nuisance, being given a poison which they pass to one another when grooming.
Common diseases carried by the bats are murrina, which comes mostly from cattle, Chaga's disease, and of course rabies.
There have been extraordinary instances of human deaths when certain conditions line up, and the bats carry rabies. Dozens of people at a time can lose their lives from the disease. This is mostly among indigenous peoples.
Vampire bats live primarily in parts of Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean.
